This blend was created with Blender 2.69
I created it as part of the weekend challenges here:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?17-Weekend-Challenge
This is for weekend challenge number 546 with the theme: Vibrant Contrast
To create my image for the challenge, I duplicated the paint can several times, creating a new paint color for each new instance. I then created a group with the cans. Finally, I added a plane and a particle system emitting the group from the vertices.

Trying to keep the blends I upload to blendswap clean as possible. Sent you a link to the full file I used to create the image, with particle system included. It is a bit cluttered though. Sorry for that.
Glad you liked it.
can you post or share link to complete file please, interested in the process you explained in the description. tanx,
Hello PeeDee76, The process I so poorly described was me trying to do something similar to what was done in this excellent tutorial: http://vimeo.com/21098838 The hexagons in that tutorial are far taller than my paint cans so the effect is much more dramatic. This tutorial does a much better job of explaining the process than I can. I will be happy to send you a link to my full blend file, but please understand it is a bit cluttered. :-) Thanks
This is slightly misleading because whereas the uploaded image shows a multiple paint can particle system render, the uploaded blend file is of a single paint can filled with yellow paint standing on a reflective floor.
I downloaded it to look at the particle system :-)
Never mind, I think your challenge entry is definitely vibrant and colourful and I hope it wins. It was my favourite of all the entries I just looked at.
