Traditional Japanese Tatami mat flooring. These straw mats are often found in traditional style japanese rooms. I originally used this in a dojo scene.
The dimensions of each floor panel is exactly 2:1, twice as long as wide. This makes it easy to create different floor patterns by snapping panels together. Also each panel is made with 3 quads, the long sides have a border and having the border on a separate quad makes it easier to customize.
All of the textures were drawn entire by me. The straw was hand draw in gimp based on reference photos. The border pattern was created in inkscape as an original design based on the styles of patterns seen in reference photos. There is also a subtle fabric texture on the border which is from a photo I took of a piece of fabric.
Update (Aug.14,2014): Corrected the rotation of the straw texture and added additional border patterns for customization.
Great feedback. I will definitely fix the texture rotation and upload a new version soon. I am also interested to know what texture dimensions you went with, the straw is probably much thinner in real life than what I had it set to, but the larger size straw looked better to me from a distance in blender.
As for the border design I noticed that in most reference photos the border appears black from a distance but most of the close up shots had bright colors and patterns. The dark blue texture I made was to try to replicate that. I want to try to create a couple more borders and include them. However I probably don't want to copy patterns directly from what I see on the internet because of copyrights, which is why I made my own.
Also the Dojo scene I was trying to recreate was loosely based on the one from the Matrix and a couple other CGI scenes I found online. I don't know how accurate it is but I rewatched the Matrix scene and it looks like they are fighting on tatami mats unless there is another similar looking mat. But I have also heard before that the mats are not super durable and expensive to replace.
Did you open it in Blender 2.7? If not, then the texture won't be in place by default. You'll have to either open it in 2.7, or you should be able to get the texture by going into the blend file itself. Hope this is helpful, sorry you didn't get a response sooner!

Awesome blend, thanks so much for sharing! Not to mention using criticism and updating the textures! (ノ^ヮ^)ノ*:・゚✧
Sorry for constant edits, but I followed this for newer versions of blender: https://www.katsbits.com/codex/old/ an I am still missing the image files for the textures. It only finds the bump map images

Pretty good, although the straw weaving should go width-ways, not length-ways, so I rotated the texture. I am certain of this because I am sitting on tatamis right now. I tried this using my secret 11 herbs and spices toon shader, and it looks good. It should save me some time if I do a tatami scene. Thanks. I may have seen something like your blue border design somewhere, but the ones in my house have green borders. If you wanted specific reference photos, I could send you some taken with my quite average camera. Also, I don't think dojos would use tatamis, or you would have to change them at least every year! (Not cheap ! ! .)
