The Dornier Do 228 is a twin-turboprop STOL utility aircraft, manufactured by Dornier GmbH (later DASA Dornier, Fairchild-Dornier) from 1981 until 1998. In 1983, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) bought a production licence and manufactured 125 aircraft for the Asian market sphere. (Source Wikipedia)
The 228 is not a plane to sneeze about :-) I remember seeing a documentary about Nepal, where there is one (more than one, surely) airfiled carved on top of a mountain ridge, the runway is ridiculously short and has a very spectacular slope. Spectacular or frightful, you choose! So planes to land have to go uphill and let the climb brake them, and to take off dooooooown they go!
--- added --- I found it, go to youtube and search for the Lukla or Tenzing-Hillary Airport. It was dirt runway when I saw it but is hard surfaced now :-)
