We've all seen the movie -- no, not that one, the other one where a hand seems to get a mind of its own... oh never mind. Here's a very simple rigged hand from a model developed by the MakeHuman team and full credit to them for it and the texture.
The rig is very simple IK so you can move the fingers in all sorts of odd directions - a better rig would be needed to do more "human" animation without having to worry about fingers getting bent into all sorts of painful positions. Of course, that's part of the fun.
I've included a very simple plinth made using an extruded cube an some Catmull-Clark subdivsions. This is a great way to model organics and a technique I've only just discovered - but it allows you to make very complex models that are still all quads so they deform beautifully.
There's also a REALLY simple procedural wood texture in here for the plinth. It's not particularly clever or well defined but it will give you a starting point for your own.
