Introduced in 1981, the Ohio Class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) has been the mainstay of the United States Navy's ballistic and guided missile submarine fleet, carrying half of the American nuclear arsenal. Nearly undetectable, the Ohio Class submarine is capable of launching 24 nuclear ballistic missiles, each carrying up to 12 multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs). This makes a single Ohio Class sub a viable second strike weapon in the case of nuclear war.
