The first of the larger Smith & Wesson revolvers, this top-break cartridge revolver was one of 70,000 produced between 1861-1874 and was one of the more popular cartridge revolvers of the American Civil War, especially among officers. Notable users include George A. Custer's engraved dual set, William T. Sherman's sidearm, and they were issued to the 7th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry. Approximately 35-40,000 were used during the war.
