Experimenting with a glass lens and a pinhole
The scene consists of
a motive (the emitting smiley)
a half reflective mirror (in the middle) splitting the light into one part continuing horizontally and one part going upwards
a glass lens refracting the horizontal part of the light and focusing the motive on the screen to the left
a 'pinhole' camera on top catching some of the vertical light and showing the motive on a translucent screen.
The purpose of creating this scene was simply to test if I could get a sharp projection of the motive through a lens.
Hi, thanks for the feedback. I guess I was a little bit short on the scene description. I have added some more info.
!Nice! Now we can make an analog picture.. in ... eh 3d... :) Impressive to see that this also works the way it 'should'. Done with cycles?
Nice experiment I love it. And will try to render it with another renderer (thea render).
Cool! There is probably room for some improvement by fine-adjusting the distance between the lens and the display. You might get it sharper. Takes a little time though, since you don't get the immediate feedback you would in the real world. :-)
Here are 3 attempt made within Thea render. I've used some global medium for giving a little foggy atmosphere. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SLPZbVvn1II/T6twBQPyiwI/AAAAAAAAP84/ln2h1aWKuuI/I/UUUU.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RluYBXck5YY/T6mRgmiG0aI/AAAAAAAAP84/jz9eQQ3jJb8/I/TON.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HxghG-mUiSc/T6rVy7IiwnI/AAAAAAAAP84/HT8u5eBKdpw/I/TON2.jpg
Very nice!
By the way, I forgot enabling smooth shading on the lens. I guess interpolated normals will give a sharper projection.
I think I've smoothed the lens in fact. Anyway I've tried with a 3D object instead of just a plane. I've used an famous helicopter model you can find here i think.

Work not so bad, but difficult to have the "good focus".
And with an animated helicopter that give nice results to me : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIzipLAJ85w&feature=player_embedded&hd=1
Hah! That was really cool! Next step: a red lens and a blue lens, and some 3d glasses :-)
Yes good Idea. Here's are some more experiment. This time with a skull and a little bit of difference. I cannot stop to play with it ^^

its nice! but u only showed us the scene, why not also show us the result of this " Experiment with Optics " ? if u did then i dont get it :S
