    I have a newbie question. Why does only half of the sofa appear in blender for me? how do I make the full sofa appear?

    There is an x-mirror modifier on each object. I don't know why that doesn't show on your screen. Maybe it has to do with different blender versions or something. I use 2.63.

    I don't know, but you could try toggling the realtime visiblity switches on these modifiers.
