Edge nodes takes the normal and z-pass, along with alpha and ob/mat indexes, and utilizes the already available filters within Blender's composite node system-- Sobel, Laplace, etc.
This is not to replace Blender's own "Edge" or the Freestyle branch by any means, just to give more options and compliment what already exists for line art.
Please do experiment and abuse this setup, and please improve on it!
This has been a collaborative venture between LightBWK, Daniel Kreuter, and myself.
A post on how it works is here:

This is, quite frankly, absolutely fantastic. To say great work would be an understatement. Works in BI, works in cycles. Just awesome. To think that we've been waiting on Freestyle for three years......and you come up with a viable alternative in a month!
Merry Christmas Blenderheads. Edge nodes has Z depth fixed. A colorful fix. Download version 1.1 >> http://db.tt/uxRy57Qf
Don't have video tutorial yet, but there is a static tutorial. http://studiollb.wordpress.com/2012/12/24/edge-nodes-tutorial/
The system requirement to use the nodes is minimum 4GB of RAM for Windows, 2~3GB of RAM on Linux (most distro) and 4GB on Mac. Works best on a 64 bit system.
great
