A fairly accurate model of the F/A-18 Hornet (two-seat "B" version). Details include landing gear, engine areas, etc. Cockpit is "blocked out" only.
Note: Textures must be unpacked before rendering!
Most of the textures are included... but I made the decals and a few "tweaks" in GIMP after the render. Shouldn't be too hard to reproduce. The textures are fairly basic, anyway... most of the details are modeled.
In anyone's interested, you can also vote on my future BlendSwap projects here.
Thanks, man... means a lot coming from you. Unfortunately, the textures aren't up to the same standard as the model... they break the illusion on a zoom way before the modeling does. Ah, well... live and learn, right?
Amazing work !
I noticed a little problem on GBU-12 bomb. One of the front wings is slided down on some reason :)
Huh... I just took a look and you're totally right. Not sure how I managed to screw that up:) Should be an easy fix, though - just set the cursor to the bomb's tip, set your "Piovt Point" to 3D cursor, and then rotate the misplaced fin on X-Axis by -45 degrees. Textures won't be affected. I don't figure it's worth re-uploading a 26 MB file to fix this little glitch:)
Fantastic model-you've got the proportions just right! Any plans to do an F14 Tomcat (Top Gun)? Would love to see a properly modelled Tomcat.
Oh, dude :) Funny you should mention that... I was torn between the F-18 and the F-14. Finally went with the 18 because a friend of mine used to work on them and he offered to give me a few pointers. But I would love to do the 14 someday. Got too many projects on the plate right now, though, unfortunately.
Well if anyone could do justice to the Tomcat its you! Go on mate - do it - you know you want to! :)
I agree with @stealthworks - do the F-14D. Pleeeeeeeease?! (In my best whiny-voice-via-text. Ha!!) Would love to see one.
great model chris, your technic is very interesting and very exact. use you blueprints or photos?
Hi Chris: Very nice detail work as usual. Downloading as we speak. I'll dissect this one as well to maybe learn something more. Thanks for this. You rock man keep it up.
That is a heck of a modeling job, probably the most detailed fighter jet I've seen in a long time. Kudos KuhnIndustries! Great work!!
Brilliant modeling, well done. You said you were looking for a plan of the Titanic. Try - The-Blueprints.com there are over 55,000 drawings of all types of ships, planes, trains to name a few catagories
Makes me wanna go to the ocean and record some ocean scene and then add the plane swooping down and making waves =)
Please do... but you'll need a supercomputer in the basement to render that out :) Or maybe not... maybe mine is just old :)
Hehehe I think mine will do, 2xGTX690 ;) not fully functional yet with Blender, but I guess the next updated drivers will work better.
It seems that when I try to export an OBJ from this the UV on the fuselage gets messed up. Anyone else having issues with this? any ideas what I might do to get it correct?
At one point in the modeling process, I was using multiple UV maps for the fuselage. They may still be there, and Blender may get confused during export. Try deleting any unnecessary ones... (you should only need one on the final model). Can't remember what I called them off the top of my head, but I'm sure you can figure it out.
How do I learn how to make something like this? Best I can come up with is some shitty low poly stuff.
Can you please model the TurboKat from Swat Kats. :)

Actually.... actually... I just might:) Gotta see what reference material is available, but I watched that as a kid and loved it. And being that it's a cartoon, there should be lots of options to "upgrade" it. Let me know if you stumble across any more pics :)
Can you please upload this Hornet as FBX or OBJ file so that i can work with 3dsmax. I tried importing this in max but UVs doesnt work.
Well I'm not going to upload it that way on BlendSwap... it would increase the download size for everyone and most people won't use it. But it's an easy conversion if you want to do it - Just open Blender and go to File -> Export -> Wavefront (obj). But I don't use Max, so I can't make any promises about textures, UVs, materials, etc. The mesh should carry over, though.
Yes the mesh imports fine but UV's dont. I tried both FBX and OBJ. Front landing gear textures, Fuselage textures are all messed up in 3dsmax.
Hmmm... I think there are actually two separate UV maps for those parts, which may be why it's messed up. If you wanted to, you could probably bake out the textures to new maps and then delete the previous two. That's the only reason I can think of why those parts would be different... but it makes sense.
Actually this is the very first time am using Blender. I downloaded blender just to get this model.
THE UV NOT SHOW IN BLENDER I EXTRACT THE FILE BAT THE TEXTURES IS NOT COME
It's not enough to extract the file... you have to unpack the textures themselves under External Data. Did you do that?
holly s....!!!! the details are amazing! i just spent half an hour just looking at variable exhaust tubes and landing gear... kudos to you, man!!
We are looking for a Vehicle modeler and UVW artist for a game project we are working on. If you are intrested we would be extremely honored for you to join our team.

Please Consider
Hey,
Textures are included. You already have them, but they need to be "unpacked" before you can use them. Open the model and go to "File -> External Data -> Unpack Into Files". Then Blender will create a directory with the textures, and you will see them when rendering.
Amazing model, thanks for sharing Chris!
I just used it to test a new way of creating heat distortion in blender. http://youtu.be/UY7ieTwPDXY
Great work as usual! Here is a little something I created with it: Blender: Airbase Render V2_3 (WIP): http://youtu.be/7rmAkTlJAAs
This is indeed a great model. But I need it with the gear up. I tried to rotate the landing gear doors in place. Worked great with rear main, but the other rear doors are linked. Not sure how to unlink. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Even better would be a version with gear up. Thanks in advance.
Hey, do you have a tutorial on haw to do this kind of textures (jet texture)
hii its really a fab model just hats off....... and I have one question ..if u dont mind actually from where u have learned blendr 3d...?
Very Sexy Model of the F-18. As a triple SAG represented award winning Actor, Filmmaker, Post Production Editor, and just now getting into VFX, Compositing, & 3D Modeling, this is incredibly inspirational. I'm letting my studio rendering machine [27" iMac 5k Custom] render out a simple animation to play around with it combined with some footage I shot here in on the square in downtown Denton/North Texas. I'll post a YouTube link when I get something rolling bringing your model alive. Thanks for this. I agree with the above. As a Top Gun fanatic...F-14D would be pretty gnarly or an F-16 in any livery. You can check out my past, present and future projects at www.imdb.me/randyshoemake & www.sle7endarystudios.com. Thanks again for this amazing model!
You are such a Good Modeler Chris, Do you have a fiver or do any freelance work? I am interested in linking up with someone of your talents. Regular payments for models is what I am offering. Let me now :) Lambo LAMBO-Mods.com
damn, i want to make this jet but i can't find out of the body ends going down.
Amazing work. I've run into a couple of F-18 models in the past and I gotta say this is one of the better ones out there.
Hi Thank you for sharing! I Have a problem with the body texture, the body texture is not match with the UV mapping, is there any quick way to fix it?
Superb asset! Im totally new and wondering if there is a way to toggle or animate the landing gear so the wheel bay doors are closed while flying? Thanks!!
As always an amazing render, i followed the wip in facebook and the result is as stunning as the construction itself, good work and thanks :)
