    In ancient rome they used short swords called "gladius", and the celtic and germanic used similar broad swords without guard. You could classify such a weapon as heavy dagger, but it is more a short sword / broad sword. These weapons are very old, the reason why they have short blades is mainly because it was difficult to make really good long swords back then.
