Description:

The time machine from back to the future... fully rigged and detailed. It was hard to find good reference pics for the undercarriage of the "hover" version, so I sort of invented it :)

In anyone's interested, you can also vote on my future BlendSwap projects here.

Enjoy!

Thanks, man :) I didn't end up using that lighting setup, btw... it worked great with those shaders, but the DeLorean doesn't have a regular paint job, you know? Thanks, though!

Serious Chris, everytime you upload something I think there is no way you can top the last model. This one is no different. I love seeing your skill progress so fast. Keep up the amazing work. It's always a treat.

Thanks:) Speaking of progression... this site has been really amazing to watch over the last couple of years. When I first got started, a lot of the models (including mine) were fairly primitive. But every time I log on now, I'm amazed at the stuff people create and give away. I don't know if there's anything else quite like it. So... great work yourself, and thanks!

Well done! I've been looking for a 3D version of the hover converted De Lorean for some time now, but no one else seems to have made this except you. I'm pleased you did this, and I don't mind that you had to create your own undercarriage. I'm pretty happy you did this!

I always wondered why the wheels have to pivot. Do they provide the thrust?

    Written June 03, 2013

    ChrisKuhn

I wondered the same thing:) Especially since the car lifts up prior to the wheels pivoting. And the fact that the wheels look pretty stock. No rocket boosters or anything...

Very Nice! Just wondering though, the wheel origin points are in the center of the vehicle. This makes rotating the wheels for anim kinda tricky. I don't want to ruin your awesome model by messing with it myself. Just figured I'd let you know.

It opens in Cycles by default. If your graphics card doesn't support Cycles, Blender will crash when you try to open the file. If that's the problem, then open a new Blend file with BI render and import all objects w/ SHIFT+F1. Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you. Sorry :)

I believe I mentioned that in my comment - Open a new Blender file, press SHIFT+F1, Then import all objects. You'll have to fix the materials if you do that, though - they're set up to work with cycles.

This is an amazing model. I wanted to play around with it in Element from Video Copilot. I found a few strange things. The passenger side rear tire exports reversed or locked in space. The passenger side rear view mirror is reversed as well. The passenger side gull wing door glass is inside instead of outside so when you view from outside the car it does not show up. These are strange things from within Element so I don't know where they originated. I thought that maybe you duplicated the door from the drivers side and placed it on the passenger side. If that were true then some of the placement for items like the glass and mirror might not have transferred correctly in space. Anyway, just an observation and by no means a negative comment. You do incredible work.

Thanks! You are correct, sir... I knew I'd be rigging it, and I hadn't planned on exporting to other formats. There's a lot of "clean up" work that I'd need to do prior to exporting. For example, the tire you mentioned is not rotated @ 0/0/0. It works when parented to the mech rig, but if disassociated (via export) it will jump to it's original position/rotation. Don't know why the mirror would be like that... it's not rigged. But who knows what I managed to screw up in the process :)

  • studiomace profile picture
    studiomace

Update: After applying shaders in Element I was able to correct most of the display issues that I was fighting with. There is an advanced option in Element labeled "Draw Backface" This corrected the mirror issue and other objects that were displaying incorrectly in Element. The back tire is problematic. It will have to be corrected in Blender. The rigging is not accessible in Element, at least I can't seem to control it. I am going to investigate that further. Just thought you might want to know and let others who have this model know in case they are exporting to Element.

    Again, Awesome Job!

    Cheers!
