Hello! This is Jonathan with a support update.
Some of you might know that image below very well...
Recently we had a number of reports from users about a bug between Blend Swap and Safari. The bug manifests as the blend files loading directly into the browser's window instead of downloading as usual.
Even the Right-Click downloads don't work :S Read at the bottom of the post
I have run some tests and my diagnostic is that the problem is not on Blend Swap, the Themes's code or even the JavaScript that runs some downloads related stuff.
I ran tests with Firefox 3.6, Google Chrome 9.0.597 (which is powered by Webkit just as Safari), Camino Web Browser 2.0.6, Internet Explorer 8, Opera 11.01 and even with (believe me, I did) Songbird's built in web browser, and ALL OF THEM, performed perfect downloads.
So the problem is in Safari, it has a bug we, of course, can't fix. So for now there is two things you guys can do for us and for Apple.
One is to port you web life/experience to a better web browser, like Firefox. Seriously, Safari is no rival for Firefox, now you know it by experiencing a silly bug like this. PLUS Firefox is Open Source just like Blender ( yeah, I'm a FLOSS geek... :$ ).
The next thing is reporting your issues with the browser to Apple.
That's it.
I leave you with a last thought.
When you have issues with your web browser test with another one just to make sure where the bug is, it is very likely that the bug is in your browser and not in the website, we web developers test on everything we can to make sure you guys have a smooth experience when surfing the site we build.
Anyways thank you for your reports, without them we'd never could have been able to detect Safari's flaw.
Jonathan / ceropecero.
PS: After submitting your bug report to Apple you still have the same browser... Seriously, get a better one. Just sayin' :P
I just discovered that Safari does download the blends when you Right-Click on the links and select "Save linked file to Downloads" menu item. Safari saves the file as "blend_name.blend.txt". You can then change the extension by taking the .txt off from the file name in your file browser, the tested files opened correctly in Blender 2.5.6. This was discovered and tested on an up to date Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard laptop, I do not have a Windows machine to test safari on, but it is very probable you'll get the same result.
